Merlot thrives at Becker Vineyard’s higher elevation on the upper terrace of the Black Sage Bench. The 2016 Becker Vineyard Merlot was handpicked over six days from October 14 to 19 to ensure all blocks were harvested at optimal ripeness. The result is a full-bodied wine that combines freshness with generous, ripe fruit.
Exceptional wines from historic vineyards.
2016 had a long, gradual growing season with an exceptionally warm spring resulting in the earliest budbreak on record. However, moderate temperatures into the summer allowed us to retain acidity while achieving optimal ripeness.
Becker Vineyard was initially developed in 1977, as part of the pioneering Becker Project, which demonstrated that vitis vinifera could thrive in British Columbia. However, the property’s potential for late ripening red varieties was first identified in 1993, and was replanted to Cabernet family varieties that year. Tucked up against the Okanagan Highland mountains, Becker Vineyard produces finessed, elegant wines from the upper terrace of the Black Sage Bench.
